Different Parts of Medicare Insurance

Medicare is the federal health insurance program for people who are age 65 and older, certain young people with disabilities, and people with End-Stage Renal Disease, sometimes called ERSD.

  • Medicare Part A

Medicare Part A is the hospital insurance component of the federally administered Original Medicare program that provides coverage for inpatient hospital services, skilled nursing care, nursing home care, hospice, and certain home health care.

  • Medicare Part B

Medicare Part B is the medical insurance component of the federally administrated Original Medicare program aimed at diagnosing or treating conditions in an outpatient setting such as a doctor’s office or outpatient surgery center, preventative services, and things like durable medical equipment and limited outpatient drugs.

  • Medicare Part C

Medicare Part C is also known as Medicare Advantage plans or MA. They offer Part A and Part B benefits through a private health insurance plan approved by Medicare. These plans may include additional coverage such as prescription drug coverage, dental coverage, or health and wellness programs.

  • Medicare Part D

Medicare part D plans, also known as Prescription Drug Plans (PDPs), are stand-alone prescription drug plans that offer coverage for medication costs. They too are offered through private insurance companies contracted with Medicare.

  • Medicare Supplement

Medicare Supplements, sometimes called Medigap and MedSupp, are plans that help cover health-care costs that Original Medicare does not cover, including deductibles, copayments, coinsurance, and other out-of-pocket costs.

Additional Medicare Coverage

These plans can include coverage for prescription drugs, dental coverage, and health and wellness.

A Medicare Supplement plan is coverage in addition to Part A and Part B typically covering your expenses beyond what Part A and Part B doesn’t cover with partially or in all.
